Jim Russell Championship Series Champion 2009

Sunday, November 15, 2009 10:58AM Behind The Wheel With Brett Smrz

Hey Everyone,

First off, I would like to thank everyone for all of the donations I got for the Team USA Scholarship. I got tons of donations in, and it is going to help me with the costs for the trip tremendously! It is so awesome to know I have so many fans, and I am glad my experiences in the UK could be shared with all of you!

I did the last weekend of the Jim Russell Championship Series this weekend, and ended up with 2 poles and 2 wins throughout the weekend. Gabby Chaves (Formula BMW USA Champion) decided to come out and do a race with us this weekend, and it was great to be able to race against him again. By me winning both races this weekend, it allowed me to win the 2009 championship! Despite missing 3 weekends, I was able to come back and win the championship, which was awesome. I didn't think I had any chance at the championship after I missed 2 weekends, but I noticed I had a shot and went for it.

The championship came down to the last day of the weekend where Greg, Aleks, Nick Galante, and myself all had a shot at winning the overall points championship. That is how tight the points were at the end of the season, which is awesome! Aleks Altberg really impressed me this year with his speed. It was his first year ever racing, and he was almost all the way up to speed by the end of the year. He will be a threat, and a tough one to beat next year. For the 2010 season, Jim Russell announced a prize package for the champion, which was a Formula 2 prize. That means the winner would be spending a year racing in Europe in 2011! I am going to be focusing my entire season on that prize, and I will do my best to win the championship 3 years in a row. Jim Russell is holding a driver shootout in December, which will gather some great drivers for next year; so the competition will be tight next year.

In any case, I look forward to racing with everyone again next year, and hopefully the season will be as fun as it has been the last 2 seasons. We have such a fun time at Jim Russell, and I hope we can continue that.

I want to thank Jim Russell for giving a free prize package to the winner of the Championship Series to run in their championship again next year. I also want to thank the Team USA Scholarship and all of its supporters for allowing me to run a few races in Europe. The experience over there was incredible, and I learned quite a few things that will continue with me throughout my entire career. I would also like to thank eFormulaCarNews.com, RaceSimsRus.com, and Sparco Race Wear for helping me throughout the season.

Special thanks go out to my parents for the support they gave me throughout the entire season. They work hard at teaching me things to excel my career, and I am very close to taking over my entire racing operation. Thanks go out to my friend Mathew Cragun for coming to watch me this weekend at Infineon. Last but not least, thanks go out to all of my fans for all of the support they gave me.

Keep updated on my website! Even though I am in the off season now, I will keep my blogs updated every now and then.
