The pressure to perform is what you make of it. Ask Brett Smrz. This weekend he’s following in the footsteps of Jimmy Vasser, Bryan Herta, Buddy Rice and A.J. Allmendinger while flying the flag of the Team USA Scholarship in the Formula Ford Festival at England’s Brands Hatch circuit.

If that’s not enough, consider that Smrz and teammate Connor DePhillippi are following hard on the heels of last year’s Team USA drivers – Josef Newgarden and Conor Daly. All Newgarden did was win the Formula Ford Festival. All Daly did was capture the similarly prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone a fortnight later.

Two Podium Finishes for Team USA in Opening Heat Races at Brands Hatch

Brands Hatch, England (October 17, 2009) – Team USA Scholarship drivers Brett Smrz and Connor De Phillippi lived up to expectations today. Each earned a podium finish from their respective 15-lap Heat races as the famed Formula Ford (Kent) Festival commenced on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit.

Smrz, 18, from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, was first to step up to the plate in Heat One, with De Phillippi instead taking a seat in the grandstands at Paddock Hill Bend to watch the early stages. The latest pair of Team USA Scholarship drivers, Connor De Phillippi and Brett Smrz completed a successful first test session at the Brands Hatch Circuit on Thursday, ahead of making their European racing debuts in this weekend’s (October 16-17) renowned Formula Ford Festival.

After an overnight flight from Boston to Dublin, followed by a seat fitting at Cliff Dempsey Racing’s shop in Ashbourne, County Meath, Ireland, De Phillippi and Smrz took an overnight ferry journey to Holyhead in north Wales and then a lengthy drive to Brands Hatch in south-eastern England. Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, Sonoma, CA – Brett Smrz, of Coeur d’ Alene, ID, captures second win of the weekend. Gregory Liefooghe, of San Francisco, and Thomas Asseo, of Versaille, France, completed Sunday’s podium of the Jim Russell Championship Series at Infineon Raceway.
